This session will welcome delegates to ‘Can Do’ Health and Care Expo2024. The session will include a welcome and introduction to the day from key system leaders and a keynote speaker. Cllr. John Spence, Essex County Council – as Co-Chair of Suffolk and North East Essex ICP Cllr. Lesley Scott-Boutell, Colchester City Council Ed Garratt OBE DL, NHS Suffolk and North East Essex ICB Susannah Howard, Suffolk and North East Essex ICP MAIN STAGE 10:00am – 11:00am, Roman Lounge, First Floor, Main Building For most of his life Terry Waite has worked in the area of international affairs and had worked in most of the world’s conflict zones. As a young man whilst living in Uganda, he negotiated directly with the late General Amin for the release of hostages and as a member of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s private staff was successful in aiding the freeing of hostages in Iran, Libya and Beirut. It was in Beirut that he was captured and spent almost five years in solitary confinement. He spent much of that time blindfolded and chained to a wall. He also faced a mock execution and was beaten. In the apartheid years he worked closely with Bishop Desmond Tutu and has continued his work for the disadvantaged in South Africa. He was a joint founder of Y-Care, an agency working for the development of young people throughout the world. He is a Lifelong Patron of Emmaus for the homeless and a joint founder of Hostage UK now Hostage International. He has written several books ranging from a serious account of his years in captivity to a book of poetry and reflections. He is both an Anglican and a Member of the Society of Friends. He is not a pacifist but strongly believes that force should only be used as an absolute last resort. That, he says, has not been the case in recent years and has resulted in dreadful chaos right across the Middle East. He is the recipient of several Honorary degrees and is an Honorary Fellow of Trinity Hall Cambridge. He was made a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George in 2023. Terry lives in west Suffolk. KEYNOTE SPEAKER Sir Terry Waite KCMG CBE • Humanitarian and author EVENT LAUNCH Maximum capacity 340 people 6 www.sneeics.org.uk/get-involved/community-events/expo-2024
